The goal of a Backgammon match is to move your checkers around the Backgammon board and pull those pieces off the game board faster than your opposing player who works just as hard to achieve the same buthowever they move in the opposing direction. Succeeding in a match of Backgammon requires both tactics and good luck. Just how far you can shift your checkers is up to the numbers from rolling a pair of dice, and how you move your checkers are determined by your overall gambling strategies. Players use differing tactics in the different stages of a match depending on your positions and opponent's.

The Running Game Tactic

The goal of the Running Game tactic is to bring all your pieces into your inner board and get them off as fast as you can. This tactic concentrates on the pace of advancing your checkers with no time spent to hit or stop your opponent's pieces. The ideal time to use this tactic is when you think you can shift your own checkers faster than your opposition does: when 1) you have a fewer chips on the board; 2) all your checkers have past your opponent's checkers; or 3) your opposing player does not employ the hitting or blocking strategy.

The Blocking Game Strategy

The primary goal of the blocking plan, by the name, is to block your competitor's pieces, temporarily, while not worrying about shifting your pieces rapidly. Once you've established the blockade for your opponent's movement with a few pieces, you can shift your other pieces rapidly off the game board. You will need to also have a good plan when to extract and move the pieces that you used for the blockade. The game gets interesting when the opponent uses the same blocking technique.
