In astonishingly simple terms, there are three chief techniques employed. You want to be agile enough to switch game plans instantly as the course of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This is composed of creating a 6-deep wall of checkers, or at a minimum as deep as you are able to achieve, to lock in your competitor's pieces that are on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most adequate procedure at the start of the game. You can assemble the wall anyplace inbetween your eleven-point and your two-point and then move it into your home board as the game continues.

The Blitz

This involves locking your home board as quick as as you can while keeping your opposer on the bar. i.e., if your competitor tosses an early 2 and shifts one piece from your 1-point to your three-point and you then toss a five-five, you can play 6/1 six/one eight/three 8/3. Your competitor is then in big-time calamity considering that they have 2 pieces on the bar and you have closed half your inside board!

The Backgame

This strategy is where you have two or more checkers in your competitor's home board. (An anchor is a point filled by at least 2 of your checkers.) It must be used when you are extremely behind as this action much improves your chances. The strongest locations for anchors are close to your opponent's smaller points and either on adjacent points or with one point separating them. Timing is essential for a competent backgame: besides, there is no reason having 2 nice anchors and a solid wall in your own home board if you are then required to break up this right away, while your opposer is getting their pieces home, considering that you don't have any other extra pieces to move! In this situation, it is more favorable to have checkers on the bar so that you might preserve your position until your competitor provides you an opportunity to hit, so it will be a wonderful idea to try and get your challenger to get them in this case!
